The Beard Struggle is easy to dismiss as another premium beard-oil company wrapped in dramatic Viking branding. Spend a little longer exploring the range, however, and it becomes clear that beard oil is only the entry point. The company has built a much broader grooming ecosystem around daily routines, fragrance, washing, conditioning, styling, heated tools, beard appearance products, subscriptions, bundles, and a member community.

That makes The Beard Struggle a more complicated brand to review than a company selling three oils and a wooden comb. A buyer is not simply deciding whether one bottle is worth the money. The bigger decision is how far into the system they actually need to go.

Some customers may be perfectly served by one oil and a wash. Others may genuinely benefit from balm, conditioner, heat protectant, a heated brush, and a more structured morning and evening routine. The challenge is separating useful upgrades from extras that mainly make the grooming ritual feel more complete.

Founded in 2014, The Beard Struggle has leaned heavily into Norse-inspired imagery, product names, and community language. That identity gives the brand personality, but it also makes it important to look beyond presentation. The real questions are whether the products address common beard problems, whether the more expensive bundles provide meaningful value, and whether claims around patchy beard care deserve the same confidence as the brand's conventional grooming products.

This review looks at The Beard Struggle from that buyer-first perspective. It focuses on the structure of the routine, scent selection, bundle economics, Carbon X hardware, Voxtr, independent customer feedback, and the practical risks of ordering. It is based on current product information, policies, and published evidence rather than personal hands-on testing.

1. The Beard Struggle Sells a Ritual, Not Just Beard Oil

The strongest idea behind The Beard Struggle is not any single ingredient. It is the idea that beard care works better as a consistent ritual. Instead of selling one universal oil and leaving the rest to the customer, the brand creates a sequence: cleanse, condition, moisturize, style, protect, and repeat.

The Day Liquid Tonic and Night Liquid Elixir are a good example. They split a familiar beard-oil category into two moments of the day. The morning product fits into the grooming and styling phase, while the nighttime product is positioned as part of the recovery and conditioning routine before bed.

Both formulas are built around familiar cosmetic oils and conditioning ingredients such as sunflower-derived oils, castor oil, jojoba, squalane, and vitamin E derivatives. That is useful context because buyers should not assume they are receiving two completely different technologies simply because one bottle says Day and the other says Night. The main value is the structure and consistency of the routine.

For someone with a dense, dry, wiry, or longer beard, that structure may genuinely help. Longer facial hair can become rough, difficult to shape, and uncomfortable against the skin, particularly when cleansing and styling are inconsistent. A regular routine can make it easier to manage both the beard and the skin underneath.

The picture changes for someone with a short beard that already feels soft and behaves well after basic washing and moisturizing. That buyer may not need separate morning and nighttime products, multiple styling layers, and several accessories.

This is an important theme throughout the entire brand: The Beard Struggle gives you many ways to upgrade a routine, but you do not automatically need every step simply because the ecosystem makes those steps available.

2. Choosing a Scent May Matter More Than Choosing an Oil

Fragrance plays an unusually large role in The Beard Struggle experience. Many beard companies offer a few scents as variants of the same product. Here, scent feels closer to a product category of its own.

The catalog includes profiles built around woods, spice, amber, vanilla, tobacco, whiskey, leather, oud, smoke, citrus, and fresher combinations. Names such as Valhalla's Gates, Viking Storm, Aesir's Triumph, and Alfheim's Forests reinforce the Viking theme, while Loki Unscented provides an option for buyers who want the conditioning benefits without carrying a fragrance around all day.

This matters more than it may seem before ordering. Beard products sit directly beneath your nose. A fragrance that smells interesting for 30 seconds from a tester can feel very different when it remains on your beard throughout a workday.

A heavier tobacco, whiskey, leather, or oud profile may suit someone who already prefers strong colognes. Another buyer may find the same scent overwhelming when combined with aftershave, moisturizer, or fragrance. Even within positive customer reviews, scent preference naturally varies.

That is why the scent sampler is one of the more sensible entry points into the brand. Paying for samples first may feel less exciting than ordering a large kit, but it reduces the chance of buying several products built around a fragrance you eventually dislike.

There is also a practical value angle. If you order a wash, conditioner, oil, balm, and cream in the same fragrance family, choosing the wrong scent becomes a much more expensive mistake than disliking one bottle of oil.

For first-time buyers, I would treat scent choice as part of the buying strategy, not as a cosmetic detail. Finding the right scent before building the routine can save more money than chasing the largest bundle discount.

3. The Best Kit Depends on How Much Beard You Actually Have

Struggle scent sampler and beard oil fragrance selection. The Beard Struggle has a large catalog of bundles, and that is both convenient and dangerous. It is convenient because buyers do not have to build a complete grooming routine from scratch. Kits group products that are intended to work together and often create a better total price than buying each item individually.

The danger is that the largest kit can start to look like the obvious "best value" simply because it contains the most products. A better way to shop is to start with the problem your beard actually creates.

If the beard feels dry or the skin underneath becomes uncomfortable, cleansing and conditioning products plus one oil may be enough. If the beard is longer and difficult to hold in shape, balm or cream becomes more useful. If the beard has pronounced waves, curls, or areas that refuse to sit evenly, tools start to matter more.

The larger kits are therefore best understood as different levels of routine complexity, not simply good, better, and best. The Ultimate Beard Kit makes sense for someone who already knows they want a complete traditional grooming system. It combines multiple care and styling products with tools, reducing the need to make each decision separately.

The Greenlander-style bundles sit closer to everyday grooming and control. These may be more logical for the buyer who wants a coordinated set but does not need heated styling hardware.

Then there is the Ultimate Carbon X Beard Kit, which moves into a different category entirely. It combines cosmetics with the Carbon X Pro heated brush, heat protection, styling products, and beard oils.

At that point, you are no longer buying a collection of beard-care products. You are buying a grooming system that assumes regular styling is part of your routine.

The easiest way to avoid overspending is to imagine removing one product from the bundle at a time. If you would not miss that product, you probably should not use the size of the bundle as your main measure of value.

If you already know what type of routine you need, compare the current kit contents and individual product prices at website store before assembling the same setup piece by piece.

4. Voxtr Needs More Scrutiny Than the Regular Grooming Products

Voxtr deserves its own section because beard-growth adjacent products should be judged differently from oil, balm, or conditioner.

The Voxtr Patchy Beard Kit pairs a cosmetic support serum with a 540-needle, 0.25 mm derma roller. The brand positions the system around patchy-looking areas, beard appearance, conditioning, and fuller-looking facial hair.

The serum includes ingredients such as aloe, hyaluronic acid, squalane, sunflower-derived ingredients, and vitamin E. Those ingredients fit comfortably within conventional cosmetic claims involving hydration, skin conditioning, and improving the appearance or feel of existing hair.

The more difficult question is whether a buyer should expect the routine to produce meaningful new beard growth.

The brand references user satisfaction findings after consistent use, but manufacturer-conducted user studies should not be interpreted in the same way as independent controlled clinical evidence. A participant saying that a beard looks fuller can be meaningful for evaluating cosmetic satisfaction, but it does not prove that new follicles formed or that dormant follicles became active.

Microneedling itself does have a growing research base, which is why the idea behind the roller is not unreasonable. The problem is that much of the stronger evidence comes from studies involving scalp androgenetic alopecia, frequently using microneedling together with minoxidil.

That creates a substantial evidence gap. Scalp hair loss, facial hair density, microneedling depth, treatment frequency, concurrent medication, and study population can all differ from the way a consumer uses a 0.25 mm beard roller at home.

There is still a reasonable way to view Voxtr without dismissing it. Regular skin care, hydration, gentle exfoliation, and improved grooming can make an existing beard appear healthier and more uniform. A structured routine can also encourage consistency, which matters with any cosmetic regimen.

What buyers should avoid is treating the kit as clinically established beard-growth therapy. Customer before-and-after photos and testimonials can show personal experiences, but they do not establish what another buyer should expect.

For someone worried about a sudden change in facial hair, marked patchiness, skin inflammation, or another potentially medical issue, a consumer grooming kit should not replace proper medical evaluation.

5. Carbon X Pro Turns Beard Care Into a Hardware Decision

The Carbon X Pro is the product that most clearly separates The Beard Struggle from a traditional beard-oil company.

Instead of asking whether another moisturizer belongs in the routine, buyers are now deciding whether their beard problem justifies a heated styling device.

The Carbon X Pro is designed around functions such as straightening, volumizing, infrared styling, ion technology, and combined styling modes. It offers multiple temperature settings between 140°C and 200°C, plus an LED display, replaceable batteries, cordless use, and a charging base.

Those specifications sound impressive, but the most useful question is much simpler: does your beard actually need heat?

A longer beard with strong waves, curls, awkward growth directions, or persistent frizz may take considerable time to control with balm and a standard brush alone. For that user, a heated brush can reduce styling effort and create a more uniform shape.

A short beard, or a naturally straight beard that already sits neatly after combing, creates a completely different value calculation. The tool can still be interesting, but it may not change the final result enough to justify the cost.

That is why Carbon X should not be treated as a mandatory upgrade within the brand ecosystem.

Heat protection is also worth taking seriously. Beard hair is still hair, and repeated exposure to high temperatures can contribute to dryness and damage. The fact that a tool is designed specifically for facial hair does not make high heat irrelevant.

The ideal Carbon X buyer is therefore easy to define: someone with enough beard length and texture to make daily styling genuinely difficult. If that does not describe your beard, it may be wiser to spend the same budget on a simpler routine and a quality brush.

6. The Sticker Price Is Only Half the Story

The Beard Struggle can look expensive if you judge every product by the first single-item price shown on the site. That is not necessarily the price repeat customers end up paying.

The brand uses several overlapping value mechanisms: bundles, subscription discounts, member pricing, and the Brand Viking program.

For consumables such as oils or regular grooming products, subscriptions can make sense once you know how quickly you finish a bottle. The company has offered lower introductory subscription pricing followed by stronger recurring-order discounts, with multiple delivery frequencies.

The catch is that subscriptions only create value when the delivery schedule matches real consumption.

If a bottle lasts three months but a subscription sends one every month, the discount can quickly turn into unused inventory. Similarly, subscribing before you know whether you enjoy the scent creates additional friction if you later want to change products.

The Brand Viking program changes the economics further. The program advertises an ongoing personal discount, Vikoins, and referral benefits. That makes the standard list price less meaningful for a loyal customer than for someone placing a one-time order.

The important point is that a discount is only valuable when it applies to something you already intended to buy.

A $150 kit reduced to $120 is not automatically better value than a $50 routine if you only need two products from the larger kit.

For long-term buyers, the brand's pricing system can become genuinely attractive because frequently used consumables benefit from repeat-purchase discounts. For a first-time customer, however, the smartest strategy is usually to start smaller, identify a preferred scent and routine, and only then optimize around subscriptions or membership savings.

7. Customer Feedback Is Strong, but the Themes Matter More Than the Score

The Beard Struggle has accumulated a large independent customer-review footprint, which helps when evaluating ownership experience.

Its Trustpilot profile has remained strongly rated with thousands of reviews. Positive feedback frequently discusses scent, beard softness, product quality, delivery, packaging, and customer service.

Those categories are useful because customers can directly observe them. A buyer knows whether a bottle leaked, whether a fragrance was enjoyable, whether a heated brush felt convenient, whether shipping was slow, and whether support responded to a problem.

Reviews become much less reliable when they move into biological claims.

Someone may sincerely believe a serum created additional beard growth. That experience matters to the reviewer, but it cannot establish whether the change resulted from the serum, normal beard maturation, grooming, lighting, styling, existing hair appearing thicker, or another factor.

That distinction is especially important for Voxtr.

Another useful signal is the type of negative review. Not every complaint indicates a bad product. Scent disagreements, for example, are unavoidable with fragrance-heavy grooming products. A pattern of repeated hardware failures, billing problems, or unresolved delivery issues would be more significant.

The overall impression is therefore more useful than any individual five-star or one-star comment. The customer base appears enthusiastic, particularly about scent and grooming experience, but buyers should still separate personal satisfaction from scientific evidence and consider whether the full routine matches their own beard.

8. The Purchase Risk Is Lower Than the Viking Marketing Makes It Look

The Beard Struggle's dramatic branding can make the company feel more unusual than its practical shopping policies actually are.

The general product range currently carries a 90-day money-back guarantee, which gives buyers a meaningful period to decide whether a routine suits them. Customers are instructed to contact support before returning products, and approved refunds are generally returned through the original payment method.

Voxtr is worth checking separately because it has been promoted with a 120-day product-specific guarantee, longer than the standard company-wide period. That difference is another reason not to assume one policy applies identically across every item.

Regional storefronts also affect the buying experience. The Beard Struggle operates different US, Canadian, UK, and European shopping environments, which means currency, promotions, availability, shipping, and final checkout costs can vary.

That makes the checkout page more important than the promotional headline.

A buyer comparing products should check the exact local price, shipping charge, discount structure, and guarantee before placing the order rather than relying on an old screenshot or a price quoted by someone in another country.

The positive side is that the brand gives buyers multiple ways to reduce risk: smaller products, scent sampling, bundles, membership discounts, subscriptions that can suit repeat purchasing, and relatively long guarantee windows.

The negative side is that this flexibility creates complexity. It takes more effort to determine the best purchase path than it would with a company selling one simple beard kit. That complexity is ultimately the defining trade-off of The Beard Struggle.

The company offers more choice, more personality, and more ways to build a grooming routine than many beard brands. It also gives buyers more opportunities to purchase products they may not actually need.

Explore The Beard Struggle Without Overbuilding Your Routine

The best way to approach The Beard Struggle is to work backward from your beard rather than forward from the catalog.

Decide whether your main issue is dryness, scent, daily control, difficult styling, or patchy appearance. Then compare the smallest routine that addresses that problem with the larger kits.

If you enjoy the scent and know which products you finish regularly, bundles, subscriptions, and Brand Viking pricing become much more useful. If you are new to the brand, starting smaller makes it easier to learn what actually earns a permanent place in your routine.

You can check current scents, Carbon X options, Voxtr kits, bundle contents, and guarantee terms directly at The Beard Struggle website.
